We seek an outstanding scholar and leader with demonstrated academic experience in urban planning, community development, and leadership, particularly in fostering just and sustainable communities in the context of climate change.The Chair will provide transformational leadership to advance the department's mission and vision, emphasizing collaboration, transparency, and excellence. We seek a candidate with experience as a department chair or other relevant academic leadership roles who can contribute to the growth of the department's programs.The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a research agenda focused on policies and plans to expand opportunities for our region's economically challenged and historically underinvested communities. The department is especially interested in candidates whose planning scholarship and practice focus on resident-led, community-based planning and development initiatives.The Department of Urban Planning and Community Development, established in 2020, offers a Bachelor's Program in Community Development and a PAB-accredited Master's Program in Urban Planning and Community Development. The department's mission is to research the structural causes of uneven and unsustainable development and prepare urban planners and community development professionals dedicated to building equitable, sustainable, and democratic neighborhoods within the Greater Boston Region and beyond.SFE is an interdisciplinary hub that addresses environmental and societal challenges through teaching, research, and outreach, focusing on community and ecosystem health in the Greater Boston area and beyond. UMB is a diverse urban public research university committed to inclusion, with over 60% of undergraduates from minoritized communities and a majority being first-generation college students.**Responsibilities:**- Visionary Leadership: Guide and shape the department's strategic direction, fostering research and teaching on climate resilience and just communities.- Program Development: Lead efforts to expand research, partnerships, and degree offerings aligned with environmental sustainability and inclusive development.- Teaching and Research: Maintain a research agenda in urban planning, community development, and climate-related fields; teach and advise students.- Mentorship and Faculty Development: Support faculty research and career development, building strong relationships within and outside academia.- Collaboration and Outreach: Engage with campus and external stakeholders, including community organizations and government agencies, to promote the department's mission.- Diversity and Inclusion: Champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice within programs and the broader community.**Qualifications:**- Doctorate in urban planning or a professional planning degree preferred.- Demonstrated scholarship, teaching, funding, and leadership, with tenure at a previous institution preferred.- Focus on or potential to contribute to social justice, urban planning, community development, and climate change issues.- Proven administrative and leadership experience.**Application Process:**Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, research and teaching statement, and three references via the UMass Boston Career Portal at by January 15, 2025.For inquiries, contact Prof. Richard Hung at richard.hung@umb.edu.UMass Boston is committed to inclusion and providing accommodations for persons with disabilities during the hiring process.
